Synopsis
Can we live without money? In Vanuatu it is possible! This archipelago in Melanesia has two parallel economic systems: a market-driven economy on the main island, Efate and a traditional one based on barter in the other islands. 80% of the inhabitants are self-sufficient, they don’t use the currency but pigs teeth! Vanuatu was ranked as the “happiest country in the world” in 2006 and wonders: how to preserve the traditional economy and barter in a context of the development of the country and globalization?
